Geek Chic; What’s Hot
Geek Chic; What’s Hot
by: Morgan Bostedt
Hey, Geeks! Guess what?!? This season, what’s chic is “geek”. A recent video clip from NBC’s Today Show states plainly that women love geeks. Carrie Sloan, the editor of Tango Magazine, says that women want a man who is curious about life and curious about them, which are two features commonly found in a geeky guy. The new trend has gone from the metrosexual to geek. Metrosexuals are frowned upon for being high maintenance. There’s a common misconception that body builders only care about themselves. The common geek is a problem solver and loves a mental challenge. A geek is supposedly sensitive enough to comprehend a woman and smart enough to make one killer living.
To be “geek” is not just hot in the singles scene, but fashion sense everywhere is curving towards geek chic. To be chic means to conform to current trends and popular fashions. While the term geek was once a derogatory term, it’s often time looked upon as meaning that someone is of above average intelligence. Geek chic is “in”. Video games, comic books, glasses, and knowledge of science and computers are a few geeky characteristics that are being embraced and flaunted by the fashion savvy. While the social shyness, pocket protectors and over-alls haven’t made their way back into today’s fashion, t-shirts with computer themes and plastic framed glasses have. In fact, iVillage’s Amy Tara Koch has done a video all about how to choose the perfectly nerdy pair of glasses. Webupon has a page called 10 Geeky Websites: Where Real Geeks Gather, which was compiled by Nelson Doyle. You can also go to http://geeksugar.com to vote on and buy different gadgets and accessories based on their geek appeal.
It is unsure as to whether this new trend is in reference to the naturally nerdy or the wearing of geeky attire for fashion reasons. However, it’s clear that “the geek” is in high demand everywhere from a marketing standpoint to the dating scene.
