You don’t have to be a billionaire industrialist/super-hero to be famous. But it helps. Hauling in over $100 million dollars on its’ opening weekend, “Iron Man” could be Marvel’s biggest motion picture success story yet. Before Robert Downey Jr. suited up for the Armored Avengers film, Iron Man was another creation of the legendary Stan Lee, first appearing in Tales to Astonish #39 in March 1963. With a rich history that includes a terrific supporting cast, a prior battle with alcoholism and a firm status in the Marvel Universe, ol’ Shell-Head continues to delight readers young and old.
On sale May 7th, 2008 is Marvel’s newest glance at the red and gold clad hero: “Invincible Iron Man” #1, written by Matt Fraction with interior art by Salvador Larocca is a sure bet for anyone who loved the movie or the classic hero, and requires a jumping-on point. There’s been a lot going on in Tony Stark’s life lately. He’s Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. He’s facing a Skrull Invasion in the pages of Secret Invasion. He also came to blows with his best friend Captain America in the pages of Civil War. Now, he faces Ezekiel Stane, son of his long-time enemy and business rival Obadiah Stane , who is out for Stark’s blood.
Marvel will unleash this series upon the comic-collecting world with multiple covers to choose from. Marvel Editor-In-Chief and former Iron Man writer Joe Quesada provides an equal ratio cover with interior artist Larocca, while legends such as Bob Layton, Billy Tan and Marko Djurdjevic provide incentive covers based on overall orders for the title. These incentive covers will probably cost you more at your local comic shop or online comic retailers. There is also a special sketch version of Quesada’s cover available to attendees of Wizard World Philly, one of the country’s largest comic book conventions this May. Dynamic Forces currently offers pre-orders on signed editions for “Invincible Iron Man” #1 as well.
